GeekVape Aegis Boost Pro Review

The Aegis line has been GeekVape’s most successful brand for many years now, and despite some recent competition, it continues to be the gold standard for IP67 (shockproof, waterproof, dustproof) vaping devices. After dominating the vape mod sector for so long, GeekVape showed that it could replicate its success in the pod mod market as well. The Aegis Boost has been wildly popular, and if the newest member of the family is any indication, it’s about to become even more so. Let’s take a look at the GeekVape Aegis Boost Pro, the pod mod that can do it all:

Aegis Boost Pro Packaging and Presentation

The product I received for this review came in a sample box, so I can’t really talk about the packaging, although I’m pretty sure it won’t be anything too revolutionary. However, the contents of the box were the exact same found in commercially-available kits, so that I can talk about.

Inside the box that the Aegis Boost Pro comes in, we have the IP67-rated pod mod, a flimsy user manual, as well as a box of accessories which contains two new P Series sub-ohm coil-heads, a USB Type-C cable for charging, a spare drip tip for the pods, as well as a metallic tool for removing the coil-heads. I never understood why they included this tool, as it’s so much simpler to just grab the coils with your hands and just pull them out.

Aegis Boost Pro Design and Build Quality

If you’ve ever used the Aegis Boost or the newer Aegis Boost Plus, than the design of the Pro version will seem very familiar. GeekVape have always been very conservative when it comes to the Aegis line; with the exception of the Aegis X touchscreen mod, all other Aegis mods had pretty much the same design. I actually complained about that in my review of the Aegis Max, but I guess GeekVape doesn’t really care, they are sticking to their iconic design.

Anyway, at first glance, the new Aegis Boost Pro, is identical to the Boost Plus. They have the same size, same style buttons, battery door and display, and they even have compatible pods and accessories. So why launch the same device twice in a span of six months, right? Well, because the Pro is in fact superior to the Boost Plus in at least three aspects that matter.

The new GeekVape Aegis Pro has a maximum power output of 100W, compared to the 40W of the Boost Plus, and it also has the second best display in the entire Aegis lineup, after the Aegis X. Lastly, the Aegis Boost Pro pod mod comes with two new P Series coil-heads that are so much better than those of the Boost Plus, in both vapor production and flavor departments.

In terms of build quality, the Boost Pro is definitely worthy of the Aegis brand. Even though we do have plastic refillable pods, the actual mod is primarily made of zinc alloy, with silicone finish for impact cushioning, and the iconic stitched leatherette handle. It’s a really well-made device, maybe the highest-quality pod mod I’ve ever had the chance to test, or at least right up there with the best of them.

The buttons on the Aegis Boost Pro are super-nice as well. The fire button retained the same diamond shape we’ve seen since the original Aegis 100W mod, only it’s a lot firmer and makes this really satisfying click when pressed, the + and – buttons, although made of plastic, are very solid and are clearly labeled.

And the display… It’s just nice to see GeekVape finally doing something about that lame black and white display it’s been suing for so many years. I knew they could do better since reviewing the Aegis X mod, but it feels good to actually see them do it. Although it retains that same Aegis-style interface, it’s a color display with decent resolution, vibrant colors and adjustable brightness. It’s great, that’s all I can say.

The battery door is the same we’ve seen on most Aegis devices so far, the micro-USB port has finally been replaced with the new USB Type-C standard, and the leatherette handle feels more cushiony than I remember. All in all, the GeekVape Aegis Boost Pro is a very refined, yet durable-feeling device.

Now for the new Boost Pro pods. Just like the mod itself, they look identical to the Boost Plus refillable pods, but they actually have a much larger coil-head slot, to fit the beefier GeekVape P Series coils. They hold up to 6ml of e-liquid, and attach to the mod via the same clever clip mechanism that the Aegis Boost Plus used. In fact, the two devices have interchangeable pods, but I should note that the P Series coil-heads need a bit more power than the 40W the Boost Pro is capable of.

Boost Pro pods have a convenient top-fill system in the form of a decently-sized slot sealed with a silicone plug, and a simple but effective airflow control. It’s basically the same system used on the original Aegis Boost, only with a larger airflow slot, which allows for more air in to get in an create bigger vapor clouds than ever before. You just twist the airflow control ring to let in as much air as you want.

But I didn’t call the Aegis Boost Pro the “pod mod that can do it all” for nothing. Not only is this new Aegis device compatible with Boost Plus pods, it also works with a 510 adapter, as well as a clever RDTA-type of pod, similar to the one we saw on the OXVA Origin X a while back. They are both sold separately, but I for one think they are worth the money.

With 100W at your disposable, the 510 adapter makes a lot of sense. This accessory is compatible with the Boost Plus as well, but since it only has a power output of 40W, it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. It also looks great on both devices, locks into place, so you don’t have to worry about it detaching accidentally, and opens up a whole new world of atomizers to explore.

As for the RDTA, it’s a bit more complicated of an accessory for beginners and casual users, but if you like building your own coils and don’t mind getting your hands dirty from time to time, it’s a must-have! Like the OXVA Origin X RDTA we featured a while back, this one is also built atop a plastic pod, which looks a bit weird at first glance. Otherwise, it’s fairly straightforward, and super-easy to build on.

The Boost Pro RDTA features a single coil build deck, with a classic parallel post design and decent-size lead slots. Wicking slots are very large, so you’ll want to leave the cotton wicks fluffier than you would on a standard rebuildable, as you don’t want juice spilling onto the deck when you tilt the pod mod.

The RDTA airflow system is one of the main highlights of this accessory. You have honeycomb side airflow on the barrel of the atomizer, with a top cap design that allows you to close up each tiny air slot individually, to find your sweet spot. But there’s also bottom airflow on this thing, and that you can’t adjust at all. So I suspect that you will be keeping the side airflow closed off completely, or leave only a couple of holes open, as you otherwise get way too much airflow.

The RDTA comes with a couple of pre-built Clapton coils, as well as some cotton strips, which is always nice, but you can pretty much use whatever coils you want with it.

Aegis Boost Pro Menu System and Navigation

Aegis devices have always had intuitive menu systems and navigation, and the Boost Pro is no different, only this time around the interface looks a lot better as well. The color display really makes all the difference, as it’s a big leap forward from the boring, black and white displays of its predecessors.

To turn the mod on and off, you have to press the fire button five times in rapid succession, and to access the menu, you press the same fire button three time rapidly. The Boost Pro pod mod, doesn’t have an actual menu, instead all the vape modes and settings are accessible via the home screen.

Pressing the fire button three times will highlight the vape mode at the top of the screen, and pressing either the + or the – button will let you scroll through the various vape modes (Power Mode, Temperature Control, TCR, VPC and Bypass). VPC is basically GeekVape’s version of custom power curves, where you can set the power output in 0.5-second increments.

You can also scroll down through the various parameters shown on screen, but most cannot be adjusted. You can change the wattage when Temperature Control mode is activated, but you can’t alter the atomizer resistance in any way, even when it is highlighted.

By keeping the – and + buttons pressed simultaneously for a couple of seconds, you can lock these two keys, while keeping the fire button active. Also, by pressing the fire button and either the – or the + button, you can adjust the brightness of the display.

That’s pretty much all there is to the menu of the Aegis Boost Pro. Not bad for a pod mod, is it?

Aegis Boost Pro Battery Life and Performance

The Aegis Boost Pro, like the Plus version before it, is powered by a single 18650 high-drain battery (not included in the kit). It features the new USB Type-C charging port, which enables fast charging, although I recommend you buy an external charger for safety and prolonging the life of your batteries.

To be honest, I wish GeekVape had made the Boost Pro compatible with 21700 batteries, if for no other reason but to set it apart from the Boost Plus. No one would have minded the extra battery life, and it would have been more of an incentive for fans to buy the new pod mod, even if they already had the Plus version. GeekVape has experimented with larger batteries on previous Aegis mods, so it’s not like they were walking into unknown territory.

In terms of performance, I can’t really complain about too much. The mod itself has been performing beautifully so far, the battery activation is lightning fast, as is the power ramp-up, and both the Power Mode and the VPC mode have working great. I’m not big on Temperature Control, never have been, so I can’t tell you anything about how accurate the Boost Pro is in that mode.

The P Series coil-heads introduced on the Aegis Boost Pro are much better than the old coil-heads that the Boost Plus had, and if you enjoy direct lung vaping, blowing thick clouds of flavorful vapor, you will not be disappointed. The two included in the kit are rated at 0.4Ω (50W – 60W) and 0.2Ω (60W – 70W), are made of Kanthal and are both mesh.

Conclusion

I never had a chance to review either the original Aegis Boost or the Boost Plus pod mods, but I’m fairly confident that the new Boost Pro is the best pod mod in the Aegis lineup so far. Not only does it have the build quality that we’ve come to expect from GeekVape over the years, but it also has a significant power output advantage over its predecessors. 100W is huge for a device of this type, and combined with the new P Series coil-heads, they really take pod vaping to a whole new level.
